What’s on offer for councils
The NSW Government wants communities to have confidence that their council is financially sound, operating efficiently and in a strong position to guide community growth and deliver quality services. That’s why it is funding the State’s largest investment in local government reform to help councils achieve these important outcomes.
Up to $25 million for a new councils
Each new council will receive up to $10 million to meet the costs of merging and up to an additional $15 million to kick-start new investments in community infrastructure through the Stronger Communities Fund.
New councils and their communities will decide how to spend their community funds.
$5 million investment in regional Joint Organisations
The NSW Government is establishing new Regional Joint Organisations to help councils work together with the State Government on important regional issues. Each new Joint Organisation will receive direct funding of $300,000 to help get established and begin the work of identifying regional priorities. The final model for Joint Organisations is being developed in consultation with councils.
$4 million to help smaller councils
Small rural councils (less than 10,000 population) are eligible for grants from a $4 million Innovation Fund to help them develop new ways of working. This might involve using new technologies to overcome the challenges of remote communities, or working with other small councils to develop a better way of providing services. The first round of projects submitted are currently being assessed, with the second round to be called later this year.
